One down....

Landon did great!!!

I have had alot of people ask me what exactly the Procrit is, so I thought I would share this:
Procrit is a man-made form of a protein that helps your body produce red blood cells. The amount of this protein in your body may be reduced when you have kidney failure or use certain medications. When fewer red blood cells are produced, you can develop a condition called anemia. Procrit (epoetin alfa) is a widely prescribed drug used to treat anemia in patients with kidney damage and in cancer patients whose lack of red blood cells results from chemotherapy. Procrit belongs to a class of drugs know as erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs), which are designed to increase red blood cells produced by the kidney.

So basically Landon is receiving Procrit injections to tell his body to make more red blood cells. His hemoglobin count was at 11, the lowest range of normal which is 11-15. This is reassuring because we know now that these procrit infections will be beneficial to him. We hope that before surgery his number is at least 15. The higher the number, the more blood in the body, and the less detrimental blood loss is.

He did great with his first injection yesterday. He was such a trooper while daddy held his hands and only cried for a few minutes afterwards. One down, two to go.
